Welcome to the Lowell Food Security Coalition

Food security is defined as access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life. Food security includes at a minimum:

  • The ready availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods.
  • An assured ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways.

The Mission of the Lowell Food Security Coalition is to increase the community’s engagement in and the capacity of our local food system, and ensure that all constituents have equal access to grow, purchase, and consume healthy and culturally appropriate food in quantities that can sustain a healthy community.

The Lowell Food Security Coalition is a subcommittee of the City of Lowell’s Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness. We have been working on understanding the reality of Lowell residents by bringing together many different sectors including: health services, youth services, emergency food providers, farming and gardening projects, universities, and others. In July 2011 we were awarded a Capacity Building Grant from Third Sector New England for $20,000 to conduct a Community Food Assessment (CFA).

The Lowell Food Security Coalition (FSC) meets once a month on the 3rd Friday of every month at 10:00 am at the Lowell Health Department (341 Pine Street, Lowell 01851.)
